Troubleshooting

Black Screen

First, be sure your Chromebook is charged! Charging your Chromebook every night is an excellent habit to form. If your Chromebook is charged and the screen is still black, check the power button in the top right corner of the keyboard. If the light is on, press the button and hold it down until the light turns off. (It will likely take more than 20 seconds.) Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to turn the Chromebook back on.

Broken Screen

Make sure the Chromebook is on so the screen light turns on. If you notice any black spots or noticeable lines (could be vertical or horizontal) across the display, then this is a sign that there is a small crack at the edge of the screen. It may not be noticeable, but that's when the screen needs to be replaced. Also, if it appears that someone has forcibly struck your screen, this definitely means that the screen needs to be replaced.

Won't Power Up

Make sure your Chromebook is charged. Do this by connecting the charger and checking that the charging light turns on. If there is no light that turns on, then this either means that your charger has gone bad or the connection inside your Chromebook is faulty.

Not Charging

Plug your charger into the wall and the Chromebook. If the charging indicating light on the Chromebook lights up, then we know that the charger and the Chromebook are charging. If not, then check your charger with a different Chromebook to see if it will work, and then check your Chromebook with a different charger. If no light appears when you change the charger, then the Chromebook needs fixed. If the light doesn't light up when the Chromebook is changed, then the charger needs to be replaced.

Chromebook Problems and Solutions

Q: Every time I take pictures on my camera, they disappear. How do I keep my pictures?

A: When you take a picture, you'll see it appear in the bottom left corner of the screen. If the picture disappears right after you take it, then you need to update your Chromebook. Click on the bottom right corner of screen (where the wifi and battery icons are). From there, click on settings. After settings, click on help. Your Chromebook should start looking for updates. You will likely have to restart your Chromebook to receive the updates. After it updates, you should be able to take and save your pictures without them disappearing.
Q: What happens when the Chromebooks are not connected to the Internet?

A: If the Chromebooks are not connected to the internet, everything remains the same. For all of your documents- the only thing that will change is it will save to your drive, but will not allow you to access it from a different computer until it has been synced online.

Q: If I don't have a wireless router, can I connect my Internet cable to my Chromebook?

A: Not directly, and most apps (Google Docs, Sheets, etc.) on the Chromebook will still work without the Internet. However, you can purchase a USB Ethernet Adapter that will allow you to do so, if you wish to.

Q: Everything on my screen is too big. How do I change it?

A: To make the items on your screen smaller, hit Ctrl + Shift + minus. To make items larger, hit Ctrl + Shift + plus.

Q: When should new students get their Chromebooks?

A: After being registered and enrolled, students can get their Chromebooks from Mr. Pullum.

Q: Do I have to use a Chromebook next year? Or can I substitute my own device, iPad, laptop, etc?

A: Unfortunately, you will not be able to substitute your own personal device for the Chromebook. The Chromebook is part of the text book rental and is a device that the school will have control over, which we would not be able to do with someone's personal device.

Q: How far away from the school can you be and still access the wireless Internet at GSHS?

A: West - Outside fence of the softball field; South - Baseball fence; East - Football Concessions; North - Coal mine Rd.

Q: How much will I have to pay for a new charger?

A: Ballpark of $40.00 for an Acer Chromebook charger - These can be purchased in the bookstore.
